Renowned archeologist Menashe Har-El has produced a new and fully updated edition of his famous book, This is Jerusalem. Including many of the latest archeological finds, with maps, up-to-date pictures and illustrations, Har-El illustrates the continuous and profound intertwining of Jewish life and spirituality with the physical structures and geography of Jerusalem.
There are few cities to which so many books were devoted as Jerusalem. Sacred to the three monotheistic religions and having history of five thousand years long, there is small wonder that it attracted so many authors.
Prof. Har-El has a marked advantage over his predecessors: He lives in a generation in which many of the city’s secrets were unearthed. In the last thirty years of the last century large scale excavations were carried out here – inside the city walls and outside the walls. Digs of such magnitude were never carried before, partly because religious objections were lifted, partly because vast areas, due to extensive building projects, were available for the first time to the archaeologists’ spades.
This is a scholarly popular book that encompasses many subjects: History, archaeology, religions, geology, physical geography etc. It is lucid, well researched and highly readable.
Prof. Har –El, professor emeritus of historical geography at Tel Aviv University, has behind him over sixty years of research and teaching. He produced a lucid account for the benefit of everyone interested in Jerusalem. The book is very well illustrated by photographs and maps, most of them have never been published before.
A proper index would have made the book much more useful.
