Events, Operations, Missions, and Personalities in Israeli History
'Out of the Limelight' is the fascinating and vividly-told story of the events surrounding the miraculous birth of the State of Israel. The author, Eliyahu Sacharov, was one of the key figures who defied the world, ignored the embargo placed on the fledgling state, and with astounding courage and determination, founded the State of Israel.
The author’s story is the account of those historical times and of the men and women who laid the foundation for the future security of the State of Israel.
The book contains many of their stories, told here for the first time.
This book is a fascinating history of the pre state Haganah and the birth of Israel with all of the famous founders who were friends or acquaintances of the author. Anyone interested in the untold story of the founding of the state of Israel will find this a fascinating story to read. The National Jewish Post & Opinion, May 2005
In this book, Sacharov informs the reader how the State of Israel struggled to come into existence. But how would he know? Well, Eliyahu Sacharov was one of the founders himself, joining the Haganah (pre-Israeli defense force) when he was in high school.
In his foreword Sacharov tells the pre-state Israel story, from as early as the 1900s. He continues to describe the 1930s and explains how dangerous it was around that time, for pre-state creators. And for Sacharov personally it was just as dangerous, facing arrest and imprisonment. But he was not deterred and in fact, this probably strengthened his conviction further and gave him the go-ahead he needed for establishing his business which could get import licenses and release of freight at ports to bring in equipment for arms production. Sacharov lays down the facts as they were – as he witnessed and experienced them – and this proves how misled the 'new' historians have been in their 'undermining and distortion [of] the moral base of the War of Independence.' His facts speak for themselves. He is a staunch Zionist who has little time for today's Israelis who have become so westernized and are totally uninterested in the real values he – and other founders of the state – fought so hard to implement.
Objective: To tell the truth about how the state of Israel emerged, from a first-hand perspective of one of the main players in the underground.
Comments: What is fascinating about the book that because it is written from a first hand, personal perspective, and thus has provided stories that are not so well known, especially vis-à-vis the British Mandatory government, Israeli Air Force, and IDF. Includes photos of soldiers of the underground (with the author in too!).
Use: To teach Israel history; military, etc.
