Mark Twain asked a simple question: “What is the secret of the Jew’s immortality?” None of the great civilizations of ancient times are still around. But, somehow, the ancient Jews and their distinctive way of life are still here. Why? This book shows that many other non-Jews also recognized this unusual phenomenon and the specialness of the Jewish people. Rabbi Yossie Goldman led Hillel's efforts to rebuild Jewish identity among university age students in the Former Soviet Union. How does one embrace them with love and respect for Jewish traditions, heritage and people, and how does one create the building blocks of community? With a doctorate in literature by age twenty-five as well as degrees in classical and modern languages and mathematics, Rabbi Herzog was fully equipped with the education of the modern secular world as well as a deep immersion in Torah. All of these tools, together with his loving yet uncompromising Jewish faith, were brought to bear throughout a lifetime of leadership that traversed stormy days indeed. World War I, World War II, and the struggle of the fledgling Jewish state for independence made for constant challenges that the rabbi negotiated with grace and wisdom. Throughout his tireless activism lobbying presidents and popes on behalf of Holocaust refugees and then the nascent Jewish state, Rabbi Herzog wrote prolifically on topics in Jewish law in numerous books and papers that are still authoritative today. The rabbi’s life is a model of the struggle for balance between religious faith and modernity, a path that he navigated with a steadiness and warmth that made him both revered and beloved, in his day and into the present. First published in Hebrew, this portrait of the life of one of modern Judaism’s most prominent figures is now available for the first time in English and will introduce the rabbi to a new generation as a model of a person of faith fully participating in modernity Reviews:

The story of Miriam Peretz' s life – the story of a mother and a homeland; of love for the Land of Israel, the State of Israel, and the Jewish people; and of the victory of spirit and faith. 1st Lieutenant Uriel Peretz, commander of a Golani Brigade Special Forces unit, dreamed of becoming the first Moroccan chief of staff of the IDF. But his mother Miriam sensed that her oldest son would not leave Lebanon safely. On the day he was drafted, she became a woman waiting for news of disaster. In November 1998, Uriel was fatally wounded by an explosive device planted by Hezbollah terrorists. He was 22. Miriam transformed the pain over his death into education and volunteer service. She began to visit schools and military bases, talking about her son’s leadership vision. Tragically, in March 2010 Miriam was forced to face another test. Her second son, Major Eliraz Peretz, was killed in an exchange of fire in the Gaza Strip. He died almost twelve years after he had eulogized his older brother: “Sometimes we pay a price for doing the right thing. The price of life.” Eliraz, who was 32, left behind a wife and four children, including a baby just two months old. Overnight, the mother who lost two sons – as well as her husband, whose heart couldn’t bear the death of his oldest son – became a symbol of grief and of strength. In December 2010, IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi awarded her a medal of appreciation. Dear Dov, You must really be surprised to be receiving a letter from a girl you don’t know... Dov Indig was killed on October 7, 1973, in a holding action on the Golan Heights in Israel during the Yom Kippur War. Letters to Talia, published in his memory by family and friends, contains excerpts from an extensive correspondence Dov maintained with Talia, a girl from an irreligious kibbutz in northern Israel, in 1972 and ’73, the last two years of his life. At the time, Talia was a highschool student, and Dov was a student in the Hesder yeshiva Kerem B’Yavneh, which combines Torah study with military service. It was Talia’s father who suggested that Talia correspond with Dov, and an intense dialogue developed between them on questions of Judaism and Zionism, values and education. Their correspondence continued right up to Dov’s death in the Yom Kippur War. His venture was supported and funded from the u.s. by a group which included Julius Rosenwald, Justices Louis D. Brandeis and Felix Frankfurter (both later on the u.s. Supreme Court), Judah L. Magnes (later President of the Hebrew University), and Henrietta Szold, the founder of Hadassah. In World War I, reacting against the oppressive Turkish regime, Aaronsohn founded a Jewish spy organization, nili, to help the British in the forthcoming battle for Palestine. Here is told the story of Aaronsohn, who is revealed as a master of strategy, and his sister Sarah, whose self-sacrificing devotion to the cause shows her to be a great historic personality in her own right. Historian Shmuel Katz here rectifies the absence of a comprehensive biography of Aaronsohn and the nili spy ring. Meticulously researched British War Office intelligence documents and the letters and field reports of nili’s central figures illustrate the crucial contribution made by nili to the British conquest of Palestine. Powerfully written, with deep sensitivity to the emotional lives of the people portrayed, The Aaronsohn Saga is both solid history and a marvelous read. Other chapters deal with little known heroes like Michael Halpern, Manya Shochat and Zivia Lubetkin and then there are the unsung heroes like Michael Levin, Adam Bier, Alex Singer and Brian Bebchick. Readers will meet courageous fighters like Roi Klein and inspiring poets like Naomi Shemer. They will learn about the struggle after 1967 to free Soviet Jews from perspectives on both sides of the Iron Curtain. The book title takes its name from a poem by the great Hebrew poetess and fighting partisan Hannah Senesh who wrote, “A voice called and I went”. Hannah answered an inner calling when she moved to Israel in 1939 and again when she volunteered to parachute into Nazi occupied Europe to help rescue her Jewish people. She gave her life to light a fire that continues to burn brightly today. In a series of essays, author and Jerusalem resident Judy Lash Balint travels to the very heart of Israel. From embattled Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip, to the home of the grieving family of a victim of the Ramallah lynching incident; from the barricades in Gilo under Arab fire, to the gas mask stations where Israeli citizens queue to collect their lifesaving equipment. These vivid descriptions piece together a stirring portrait of a people struggling to maintain normal life in the most abnormal of settings. Balint succeeds where the evening news and the most sophisticated media technologies fail. She chronicles the everyday existence of ordinary citizens, whose lives have been irrevocably altered by extraordinary events. The result is an absorbing and inspiring account of a nation and a country weathering a rough and relentless storm. A renowned book that is now the basis for a new documentary film by Alan Rosenthal entitled Waves of Freedom . The film is being shown in film festivals throughout the US and Israel. The Jews’ Secret Fleet , is the only authentic book that covers the full participation of 240 volunteers from North America. It reminds us that American Jews played a small, yet significant role in the creation of the Jewish state. Four of the American vessels became the first warships in the fledgling Israeli navy. Leon Uris , Author of The Exodus r Dramatic, moving and engrossing, this is the story of some 200 young American seamen who sailed the so-called illegal ships and carried half of the 70,000 survivors of the Holocaust to the land of Israel. The author, Michael Lev, a product of Soviet Jewish culture, avoids loud rhetoric and heroic pathos, keeping the narration within the limits of realism. A flowing, masterful read. Reviews: Jewish Book World “This novel is a somber, somewhat ghostly retelling of the people and events in the Sobibor death camp. We are awed at the hunters’ determination to locate and bring these war criminals to justice for their unspeakable acts… If you choose to read this book, do so with the expectation that it will engender a range of emotions—anger, distress, disbelief— which, it is to say, pale in comparison to what Berek and his fellow prisoners experienced at the hands of the Nazis in the Sobibor camp.”

In 1955, at age 11, Baruch was sent to study in Israel. Among the interviewed are George Schultz, Helmut Schmidt, Prof. Isaiah Berlin, Prof. Bernard Lewis, Isaac Stern, Leonard Bernstein, Shimon Peres and members of the Rothschild family. Supplemental research for the book was done in various archives around the world, including the Haganah archive and the Jerusalem archive. Teddy Kollek (1911–2007) participated in all the events critical to the Jewish people in the twentieth century: he was a pioneer at Kibbutz Ein Gev in British Mandatory Palestine, served as intelligence agent and an emissary of the Jewish Agency in Europe during WWII, coordinated military purchases in the us prior to the Israeli Warof Independence, and was director-general of the office of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion during the first years of the State of Israel. In 1965 he was elected mayor of Jerusalem and after the Six-Day War, he transformed this provincial, introspective and divided city into a flourishing capital that worked at coexistence between Jews and Arabs. The principal business partner of Otto Frank, Victor Kugler assumed managerial control of the Franks’ Amsterdam spice-importing business when Nazi persecution forced the Frank family into hiding. It was Victor Kugler who kept the business going and obtained food rations under what was the harshest German wartime occupation in all of Western Europe. Without Victor Kugler, Anne Frank and her family would have starved to death a month after going into hiding. For this heroism, Victor Kugler himself was arrested and sent to a series of German labor camps in Holland where he survived by his wits and finally escaped a few weeks before the end of the war. Several years after the end of the war, when the Dutch spice business collapsed following the Indonesian revolution that nationalized Dutch holdings, Victor Kugler emigrated to Toronto, Canada. There, he led a quiet life where nobody knew who he was and what he had done during the war. Only twenty years later he began to reveal his story. Today, at the age of 72, he is an athletics phenomenon… Given the extraordinary course of his life, it would be fair to call him the great survivor – the ultimate survivor even… the septuagenarian professor and race walker has survived not one but two of the great global horrors of the past 100 years. As an eight year-old, back in 1944, he was interned in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He was one of the few of Yugoslavia's 70,000 Jews to survive the Holocaust. As a 36-year old, in 1972, he was a member of the Israeli team who were attacked by Palestinian terrorists at the Munich Olympics. Traveling with them were Tsvi's parents, visiting from the United States to celebrate the wedding of David, Tsvi and Michal’s son, which took place only the night before. Their joy was cut short by a hail of bullets, as terrorists attacked their car from the hill above. Tsvi was killed instantly. His parents were badly wounded and his wife injured. Their lives would never be the same. Letters to Tsvi is a compilation of letters written by Michal to her husband in the aftermath of the terrorist shooting. It begins with her experiences in the hospital, and continues through Tsvi's funeral, the mourning period, and beyond, chronicling the challenges Michal must face as she puts her life back together in a new reality, without her beloved partner by her side, but with hope for the future. A powerful, poignant, and intimate book, Letters to Tsvi shows us what the television news cannot – a personal view of the bereaved victims of terrorism.

Ten psychotherapists, survivors and children of survivors of the Holocaust explore their own biographies and professional choices and responses to dealing with extreme violence.
