I always knew that there was good reason to be jealous of me. Yes, without feeling apologetic or arrogant, but with the simple understanding that not everyone is privileged to have parents like these, and yes – I have reason to be grateful to them and to Hashem. Hundreds of moments of gratitude gravitate togeth¬er into a large, vibrant picture that is strikingly inconsistent with the words terrorist attack, death, and murder, which left my mouth into the telephone just a few moments ago. BATSHEVA SADAN was a young expectant mother in 2003 when she was forced to receive the worst possible news: her American-born parents had been cut down in the prime of life by a terrorist as they enjoyed a peaceful Sabbath meal in their home in Kiryat Arba. This lyrical memoir describes the journey of grief, but more than that, it is a tribute to the people Eli and Dina Horowitz were in life. From their beginnings as dynamic and seeking youths to their choice to move from the United States to Israel to live in their homeland, from their meeting and deep lifelong love story to their struggles with infertility and endless love for their children, from their devoted learning of their spiritual tradition to their teaching and principled quest for peace, Sadan takes us through her parents’ lives, imparting who they were and the promise they left behind in their many students, children, and grandchildren. But there is nothing prior to his selection which indicates why he is qualified for such a lofty status. This book identifies – based on the text of Genesis – what Abraham’s three principle qualifications were. It goes on to demonstrate that thesis by illustrating how God tested those attributes in an exquisitely detailed and organized fashion – the “ten tests of Abraham”. This leads to an understanding of the ladder of blessings: that God blesses Abraham so many distinct times – each with a different blessing. Understanding these three qualifications is key to unlock many secrets of the Biblical text. It explains the reason for the narrative and set of vignettes provided in Genesis. It explains Isaac’s love for his evil son Esau, including his apparent desire to provide extraordinary blessings to him – even domination over his scholarly son Jacob. It also explains why Jacob’s children – no matter how sinful – are included in the Chosen People, although Isaac’s sinful son Esau is not included. Abraham is chosen to lead a Chosen People at a particular time and place. Why did God decide to have a Chosen People? Why was its progenitor selected at the particular time that he was? All that, and more, is discussed in this book. Jeffrey Jaffe’s fascinating exploration of the patriarchs is simultaneously deeply rooted in Jewish tradition and contemporary thought. While paying careful attention to the text of the Torah, he weaves it with classic Rabbinic teaching, traditional Torah commentary, and enough creativity to generate insights intended to speak to contemporary Jews. Jaffe asks hard questions and mines the sources to present what he understands as the core values which impelled the choice of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to be the patriarchs of the Chosen Nation. Rabbi Dr. Zvi Grumet Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi, the Pardes Institute, and Hebrew College in Boston I thoroughly enjoyed reading – rather learning – Why Abraham? The book and its thesis artfully and skillfully present and make relevant the three pillars upon which Jewish faith stands. I especially appreciate the breadth of the research as well as the fidelity to traditional sources to build and buttress the thesis. Jaffe’s intellectual brilliance, skillful analysis, and clarity of outlook really shine through. In my opinion, it should be required study for every maturing student of Torah to help them understand the essence of their mission as the Chosen People. Not only will it enhance their understanding of the book of Genesis, it will solidify their role as part of the chain of Jewish continuity, as this book artfully describes. The commentary of the Chinitz Zion Haggadah transforms Passover to becoming the premier Zionist holiday on the Jewish calendar. The Passover Seder, when we experience our redemption from slavery by God’s hand to become a nation, is the prime time to focus on the very close relationship between modern Israel and biblical times, when God took us out of Egypt to bring us to the Promised Land. Zionism began with our redemption from Egypt. The first section of the commentary focuses on how our traditional Haggadah, born in the galut, would have been different had it been written today. The Hatikvah, prayer for Israel and prayer for the IDF and perhaps a fifth cup are included. As we read the traditional text, we read many commentaries relating the lessons of the traditional Haggadah to the lessons of modern Israel. But the Chinitz Zion Haggadah is not just a reinterpretation of the Haggadah. This Haggadah teaches the seder leader how to teach Zionism, and teaches the seder participants the desperate need for every Jew to participate in this Zionist dream. Passivity in our challenging times must be replaced by action. Passover seders will be very different in the coming years. Every seder should have an empty chair with picture and name of an Israeli brutalized on October 7, 2023. The very tenets of modern Israel are being challenged, especially by our youth. In the last 30 pages of the text are 13 essays explaining the very basics of defending Israel, and include essays regarding antisemitism, Palestinian refugee camps, Jewish refugees, the West Bank/Judea and Samaria, Gaza, limits of criticism of Israel, the two state solution, definitions of right, centrist, liberal and progressive Jews, and many more. Dr. Chinitz encourages a discussion during each seder meal of at least some of these topics. The essays outline the basic facts, so that no discussion is based on emotions. The essays encourage serious, respectful debate. By reading and studying this Haggadah, the seder leader can best teach (a prime seder commandment) a love for Israel to all present. A moving afterword regarding the Gaza war concludes the Haggadah. Learn more on chinitzzionhaggadah.com the official Chinitz Zion Haggadah web page. Reviews “Congratulations to Dr. Marvin Chinitz for writing a unique new Haggadah which we should all make room for on our Seder tables. His mission is to bring the Zionist dream and its current reality in Israel into our Passover discussions where it belongs.” Joe Lieberman former United States Senator “Dr. Marvin Aaron Chinitz’s Chinitz Zion Haggadah is unique amongst the plethora of English commentaries as it masterfully focuses on the miracle of the establishment and flourishing of the State of Israel. While the Haggadah text primarily deals with leaving Egypt, Dr. Chinitz beautifully illustrates that entry into Israel is of equal import. Thus, Passover is not only a memory of “freedom from” but the living lesson of “freedom to.” The Chinitz Zion Haggadah will intellectually and emotionally uplift the serious student and inspire readers to protect and contribute to Israel’s aspirational mission of being a light to the world.” Rabbi Avi Weiss founder, Hebrew Institute of Riverdale – the Bayit “Dr. Chinitz’s original commentaries, interwoven with traditional texts and sources, raise essential questions that must be discussed at our Seder tables (and throughout the year).” Harriet Schleifer Chair, Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations “Thanks to Dr. Chinitz, generations to come will learn the essential Pesach story.” Peter Weintraub former national chairman, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces “Will his Haggadah reach the popular fame of the legendary Maxwell House version? Tenenbom, a bestselling author of many books, wanted to know how the Orthodox culture and way of life had changed, if it had, and how restrictive it is these days in an increasingly restrictive world outside of it. To answer this question, and many others, he became one of them again, doing what they do: praying with them at synagogues and studying with them at yeshivas, eating with them, singing with them, joining them for shabbat meals, driving with them to the graves of their holy rabbis, chatting with their spiritual leaders and all the while speaking God’s language, Yiddish. While wandering around, Tuvia caught a nap in Winston Churchill's room, curled up in Hillary Clinton's European bed, played cat-and-mouse with the most famous Labour politician, Jeremy Corbyn, and enjoyed excellent tobacco with the Brexit architect, Nigel Farage. In between, he drank the blackest of coffees with a well-known bank robber, maintained close contact with an eagle, swallowed a monster, and chatted with Jewish leaders who fervently defended every anti-Semite in Her Majesty's Kingdom. What differentiates this book from other books is this: This book is very funny. Yaron London, Channel 11 TV (Israel) Amazingly frank, amusing, fearless and chuzpadik wonderfully readable. Highly recommended. Neville Teller, The Jerusalem Report (Israel) If J.D. Salinger and John Steinbeck collaborated on antisemitism in the UK, they might have written The Taming of the Jew. H. Fragman Abramson, Jewish Press (USA) This is a frightening book and deserves to be read. David Herman, The Article(UK) A pointed, savage and often comic travelogue about attitudes in Britain and Ireland … Most excruciating, he finds perfectly 'tamed' British Jews who equivocate about the Jew-hatred in their country. Melanie Phillips, Jewish Chronicle (UK) Quizzical and tragic at the same time, the sort of comedy sketches that Samuel Beckett might have written if he were Jewish rather than Irish. David Goldman, Algemeiner (USA) An excellent book! Avri Gilad, Channel 13 TV (Israel) An accurate picture of reality, more accurate than BBC and CNN. Roman Joch, Lidové Noviny (Czech Republic) Razor sharp, sarcastic, occasionally even shocking, and very entertaining. Petr Kolář, MF DNES (Czech Republic) Tenenbom’s books are easy to read and digest. They are funny, full of self-depricating humor, and describe situations the writer finds himself in, accidentally or intentionally, that lead the reader to be fully engaged. Zvika Klein, Makor Rishon (Israel) Knowing how to deal with the everyday comic moments of life, while integrating the bizarre parts of the same life, is a craft and Tenenbom has it. Christopher Wimmer, taz, die tageszeitung (Germany) You will be amused, and often laugh out loud because Tenenbom is funny. Walter Kaufmann, Neues Deutschland (Germany) Full of investigative chutzpah and laughter, poetic like a bird flapping its wings, and sensual like a man loudly enjoying his meal ... mixing British wit and Talmudic subtleties. Matthias Matussek, Die Weltwoche (Switzerland) Without prejudice, and employing subtle humor, Tenenbom listens to his interviewees as they are desperately justifying themselves. Steffen Könau, Mitteldeutsche Zeitung (Germany) Tenenbom is the Egon Erwin Kirsch of our time. Henryk M. Broder, Achgut (Germany) Tenenbom’s writing is laced with great entertainment, while at the same time providing much knowledge. This deeply personal narrative explores the grassroots Soviet Jewish emigration movement through the eyes of one of its indefatigable leaders, focusing on the actions of heroic refuseniks in the Soviet Union as well as courageous individuals in the West – described by Natan Sharansky as the “army of students and housewives” who waged the battle to free Soviet Jews. From Russia, Ukraine, and Lithuania to the distant republics of Central Asia, refuseniks come to life, discovering their identity, protesting on the streets, defending themselves in courtrooms, defying jailers in their prison cells, and struggling to survive in Siberian labor camps. This engrossing memoir tells the story of the resistance and moral courage of men and women inside the Soviet Union and of those in the West who relentlessly crusaded on their behalf. A very important memoir.… Pamela portrays many Jewish leaders…from different communities all over the United States, as well as Jewish refuseniks from different places all over the Soviet Union. It is this personal, intimate connection between these two groups that gave inspiration, encouragement, and strength to the people on both sides of the Iron Curtain and made our struggle…so powerful. Natan Sharansky former Prisoner of Zion Tells an important part of the unique story of brave and courageous individuals who effected immense change for human rights worldwide. As president of the grassroots activist organization Union of Councils for Soviet Jews, Pamela was there from the outset. Dennis Prager New York Times bestselling author of ten books, including The Rational Bible An irreplaceable history of the movement.… Natan Sharansky called Pamela Cohen the “five-star general of the army of students and housewives,” and this is her account of how students and housewives defeated the Soviet Union.… One woman’s story here illuminates a vast historic movement that changed Jewish and Israeli history. It is 20 square miles of the finest art, music, fashion, and food in the world, sitting on the magnificent Mediterranean coastline and dotted with multitudinous green parks and promenades in which to provide shade and respite from the blistering summer sun. It’s the financial and start-up center of Israel and is often referred to as “Silicon Wadi,” a reference to it being the technology hub of Israel. It also happens to be filled with some of the world’s greatest architecture, ranging from its UNESCO-protected “White City,” featuring the world’s largest and best concentration of Bauhaus and International Style architecture, to masterpieces by I M Pei and Preston Scott Cohen. It’s also one of the world’s youngest cities, one that didn’t organically evolve upon millennia of history— it was purposefully and thoughtfully founded in 1909. A city looking toward the future. A city of modernity and culture in the midst of an ancient land and ancient peoples. Yet, when walking the streets of this incomparable city, you are cordially invited to a history lesson provided at every street corner with questions posed by its street names. Named after Tel Aviv’s greatest literary and political figures, these nods at Tel Aviv’s and Israel’s history beg the question, “Who was this person and what did they have to do with this city’s formation?” Those named after great philanthropists, statesmen, and scientists invite you to ponder the present-day results of their foresight, bravery, and vision. 50 of Tel Aviv’s Most Intriguing Streets: The Lives Behind the Names is posed to answer just those questions. Including more than 300 color photographs by acclaimed Israeli photographer, Ziv Koren, and iconic, historic photographs (many of them showing “then/now” comparisons, expressing the lightning speed at which this city moves forward in time) celebrate the visual evolution of this “City that Never Sleeps.” Insightful essays by Israeli/American writer and Professor of English Literature at Haifa University, Miryam Sivan, guide you through a brief, yet concise history of the person for whom these specific streets in Tel Aviv have been deservedly named. The photos and essays have been carefully curated by Ellin Yassky, a veteran art book editor and producer, ensuring you a unique visual and literary experience as you virtually walk along these selected streets of Tel Aviv. Is it your elementary school teacher? Possibly a grandparent who read you stories? A particular book? What tools do we use to discuss the parshah with our children? How do we arouse the interest of our listeners? How do we engage them? The Talmud tells us that when God was instructing Moshe regarding the detailed architectural plans for the Mishkan (the Tabernacle), written textual instructions were not enough. Moshe failed to understand. He had to be given a visual image – a pictorial sketch – in order to appreciate the full grandeur of the Mishkan: “According to all that I show you, the pattern of the Mishkan and the design of all its vessels.… Make according to the design which you have been shown on the mountain” (Shemot 25:9, 40). Rashbam and Ibn Ezra point to Yechezkel, who visualizes the Temple in his prophetic visions. The Rambam (Maimonides) tells us that prophecy was communicated through visual “parables” that need decoding and explaining by the spiritual virtuosity of the prophet. Again, spiritual messages are communicated via imagery and art. Sometimes pictures speak louder than words. Text, especially in Hebrew, can be an obstacle to some children, and pictorial stories can open up entire worlds. Some people are simply visual learners. How about children who are not yet reading? For others, images are a means of connecting to a side of the story that they wouldn’t appreciate through mere words; the pictures bring the words to life. It is for this reason that it is my pleasure and honor to welcome Andrew Galitzer’s book Torah Comics, which has been years in the making. Andrew, with whom I have studied at Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi, is a talented artist and a magnificent cartoonist. He is also a wonderful teacher who can connect with young and old alike. He brings a sincerity, a conscientiousness, and a deep commitment to all he does. I have seen many of his parshah comics, and they are a fabulous resource – enjoyable for kids and a superb teaching tool for adults – as he summarizes the major topics and themes of the parshat hashavua and brings them alive in cartoon format. I can see parents using the images as a way of transmitting the content of our Torah, as well as using the pictures as the basis for discussion around the parshah. Andrew has put in hours of thought and research into his parshah comics. Hailing from a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group known as the Kuki- Mizo that inhabits the remote Himalayan foothills of northeast India, they are equally divided today between India and Israel. Lives of the Children of Manasia is composed of twelve comprehensive oral history interviews with elderly members of the community in Israel. Conducted in the Mizo and Kuki languages by Isaac Thangjom, the interviews were translated by him into English and edited by Hillel Halkin. Many of the men and women interviewed here were among the founders of the Judaizing movement that led to the formation of the B’nei Menashe community in the early 1970’s. Their individual life stories, remarkable in their own right, narrate a collective drama that until now has been shrouded in myth and misconceptions. This book reveals how an initially small group of people descended from jungle warriors, illiterate rice farmers, and practitioners of a traditional tribal religion courageously found their way to Judaism; what about the latter attracted them, though they had never before met a real Jew in their lives; and how their fierce attachment to their new faith eventually brought them and many others to Israel, where some five thousand of them live today as full citizens. An illuminating introduction by Halkin explains the social, cultural, and historical setting that produced the B’nei Menashe, while an afterword presents surprisingly convincing evidence for their contention that they are linked to the biblical tribe of Manasseh – one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel exiled by the Assyrians in the eighth century BCE.

When Sir Reginald Mouse disappears from his apartment, the neighbors in the building advertise his room for rent. Onkelos on the Torah features highlighted English translation of the Targum (Aramaic Translation) Onkelos On the Torah: Understanding the Bible Text is a unique and remarkable translation and English commentary of the Targum Onkelos, the first and only rabbinically authorized translation of the Torah. The books of Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus are the first three of this five - volume set to be published. This deluxe edition, which contains the Hebrew Massoretic text, a vocalized text of Onkelos and Rashi, Haphtarot in Hebrew with an English translation from the Aramaic Targumim, a scholarly appendix, and a “Beyond the Text” exploration of biblical themes. About the authors: Israel Drazin is the author of seven books, five of which are on Targum Onkelos. He was the first scholar to recognize that the Targum took hundreds of items from the Tannaitic Midrashim-those that were edited around 400 C.E.-and even incorporated many words found in these Midrashim in his translation. He was able, therefore, to date the Targum Onkelos around 400 C.E., a period much later than is widely accepted, because of the Targum’s reliance upon these Midrashim. Dr. Drazin received a number of rabbinic ordinations, and earned a B.A. in theology, an M.Ed. in Psychology, an M.A. in Hebrew literature, a J.D. in law and a Ph.D. in Aramaic literature. He resides in Boca Raton and Jerusalem with his wife, Dina. Stanley M. Wagner is Rabbi Emeritus of The Beth HaMedrosh HaGadol-Beth Joseph Congregation in Denver, Colorado; Professor Emeritus at the University of Denver and Founding Director and Director Emeritus of its Center for Judaic Studies; and Founding Director and Director Emeritus of the Mizel Museum in Denver. He wrote, edited, or co-edited four volumes, A Piece of My Mind, Traditions of the American Jew, Great Confrontations in Jewish History and Great Schisms in Jewish History and was General Editor of a six volume series entitled Christian and Jewish Traditions in the 20th Century. Professor Wagner received six degrees of higher learning from Yeshiva University, including a doctorate in Jewish history. He currently resides in Jerusalem with his wife, Renee. Critic Reviews: “An enormous labor, presenting vast quantities of information, handsomely designed, user friendly and an important reference for years to come.” Intermountain Jewish News June 2006 “Learn why the sages mandated the weekly reading of Onkelos and why Rashi cites him so often.” Jewishcolorado.org March 2006 See a full discussion about this title on Dan Rabinowitz's Seforim weblog . 'The Gefen edition is very clearly printed and notated in both Hebrew and English, making it very easy to find a particular reference. On the upper right-hand page is the vocalized Hebrew text, which is printed across the full page width. Below the Biblical text is a vocalized text of the commentary by Rashi. On the left hand page, is the vocalized text of Onkelos, occupying about a third of the page's width. The volume also contains the haphtorot associated with each chapter, thus making the book ideal for use in synagogue on Shabbat. In the English translation of Onkelos the authors have printed in bold type, words, phrases or sentences that they wish to comment or elucidate. In addition, at the end of each chapter the authors have added additional notes. Yet further explanations can also be found in the appendix and these explanations are referenced in the general running commentary.' -An Isranet Book Review by Edgar Asher 'Even in the context of modern Christian philo-Semitism, a new translation of a rather specialized Hebrew classic like Onkelos, being marketed by an Israeli publisher to American Christians, is a novelty. Yet that's just what Gefen Publishing House in Jerusalem has set out to do with the release of Onkelos on the Torah: Understanding the Bible Text: Exodus (Feb.). Onkelos was a Roman aristocrat and convert to Judaism who lived just after Jesus (circa 35-120 AD). His Aramaic translation of the Pentateuch is printed in every traditional version of the Torah. In Gefen's handsome new volume and the four to follow (completing the Torah's five books), Dr. Israel Drazin and Rabbi Stanley M. Wagner translate Onkelos into modern English and supply detailed commentary on the 10,000 or so meaningful deviations the ancient translator made from the original Scriptural text. Speaking to RBL, Rabbi Drazin noted as a sign of the times the popularity of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, with its Aramaic dialogue. Will contemporary Christians pay $29.95 to read a translation from the language Jesus spoke? 'Since 1965, there has been an absolute transformation in Christian attitudes toward Judaism,' Drazin said. That year the Second Vatican Council issued Nostra Aetate which, he said, declared 'that Judaism should not be considered truncated with the birth of Christianity. That launched a search for their Jewish roots on the part of many thoughtful Christians,' both Catholic and Protestant. Gefen publisher Ilan Greenfield said, 'We were definitely thinking of the Christian market from the beginning, a market that is very much a Bible-studying market. We see that in the Christian pilgrims who come to Israel.' Two Christian stores near Buffalo, N.Y., Kairos and Bender's, surprised Greenfield by making orders of 12 and 30 books respectively—two or three times the number he would expect from a Jewish bookstore for the same title. Gefen, which is publishing 3,000 copies to begin with, is in negotiation with a U.S. Christian publisher, New Leaf Press, to distribute Onkelos here. But Christians who read the book might be in for some surprises. As Rabbi Drazin explained, Onkelos casts a light on the proper translation of texts elsewhere in the Bible. Thus in rendering Exodus 2:8, the ancient translator refers to Moses' sister Miriam as an almah, which Onkelos translates as 'girl.' The word is significant to Christians because Isaiah 7:14 speaks of an almah who 'will become pregnant and bear a son' a verse that Christians, rendering almah as 'virgin,' understand as referring to the Virgin Birth. 'We would love to reach all the Christian Bible schools,' said Greenfield. But in Onkelos, will they love all of what they find?' - David Klinghoffer, Religion BookLine Publishers Weekly, February 22 2006 Reader Reviews: 'Unfortunately, Onkelos is not always appreciated as the great interpreter he was; Indeed, every translator is also an interpreter, but no translation of the Bible has the depth and authority that comes with the interpretation of Onkelos. We are all greatly indebted to Rabbi Wagner and Rabbi Drazin for having opened up Onkelos to the English reading public.' - Rabbi Shlomo Riskin Chief Rabbi of Efrat, Dean of Ohr Torah Institutions “At last, the English speaking world will be able to understand why our Sages mandated the weekly reading of Onkelos and why it is imperative for us today to understand Torah through the eyes of the most accepted and popular translator of the Bible in Jewish history.” -Rabbi Yona Metzger, Chief Rabbi of Israel “It is a pleasure to recommend with enthusiasm this new volume… a historic translation which is more exegesis than ordinary translation. Rabbis Drazin and Wagner have added an important volume for all those who want to take Torah seriously.” -Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm, President Yeshiva University 'A lucid, readable, and enlightening translation of the classic Aramaic Targum Onkelos, which has traditionally been an essential companion to the reading of Torah. Historical and exegetical perspectives are covered intelligently and helpfully, so that the reader becomes aware of the characteristics of the text, in comparison with those of other leading commentaries. An important and congenial contribution to the Judaica bookshelf.' - Dr. Avivah Zornberg author of Genesis: The Beginning of Desire and The articulars of Rapture: Reflections on Exodus 'The authors of 'Onkelos on the Torah,' in an imaginatively conceived and beautifully crafted book have shown us not only how to read Onkelos but have enriched our understanding on how the Bible itself is to be read.' - Michael Rosenak The Hebrew University, emeritus

See all volumes of Onkelos on the Torah.

Israel Drazin and Stanley M. These questions are addressed through a review of traditional commentaries spanning the ages, combined with original approaches. Deep philosophical issues and perplexing textual questions are carefully examined and discussed in clear and incisive fashion. The actions and motivations of the patriarchs, matriarchs and other biblical figures are probed with an eye towards determining the lessons to be learned from the lives of these great personalities. Although much has been written about the subject, very little has been done to educate the public specifically about antisemitism—existing curricula are either outdated or not comprehensive, and none are designed to be engaging, especially to the younger audiences that need to learn this subject most. A Brief and Visual History of Antisemitism aims to fill that glaring gap, not merely as a history textbook but as an epidemiological study that analyzes the pathology of the antisemitism virus from ancient to modern times: when, where, and how did antisemitism first emerge? How did the disease of Jew-hatred spread so far and wide? Why has the hateful virus proven so resilient over time? Maimonides said that human intelligence is a gift from God to help them make decisions in life, and not that God directly helps people. It is their God-given intelligence that can help them. Maimonides also said that we can learn from everything God created, to which I agree. We can learn from our own body. As we will see later in this book, Elias Canetti taught that even the human body teaches lessons. Humans learned how to make a knife, spears, and arrows from the nails on their index fingers, and bows for arrows from their thumbs. The earlier rabbis taught that we can learn much from animals, even ethics from ants. Maimonides said. “The truth is the truth no matter what its source.” I am convinced that we can learn from all writings, even jokes, a few of which I have I included in this book. If people took a little time after hearing a joke to wonder why we laugh, what is it about a particular joke that provokes laughter, what we can learn from it, and its lesson may apply at other times, I firmly believe that in this way people can bring about improvement in ourselves and society. Sometimes, after these jokes I suggest thoughts to ponder, which hopefully might encourage the reader to think of an idea. In addition to jokes, I included other essays to make us think and improve ourselves, some serious, and others humorous. Chapters at the outset of the book are concise. Later chapters are more extended. For example, I have several chapters in which I address the subject of statistics in a somewhat humorous fashion. All science is based on statistics. Our lives are based on statistics. However, statistics only tell us the possibility of the truth, not the certainty of it. What should we learn from this? What causes us to laugh? Frequently, laughing shows our joy or happiness in overcoming an embarrassment, confusion, or an obvious conclusion. Why would a joke such as, “Why did the chicken cross the street? To get to the other side” trigger us to laugh? Is it because we did not know the answer before it was given and were surprised in its simplicity? What does that teach us? Laughter is also considered an evolutionary mechanism that helps build social bonds and regulate human relationships. What does that teach us that we can apply to other occasions? A laugh or a smile can make you feel better in difficult times. I found that in the rare times that I am sad, if I force myself to smile, my body may respond in kind to the point that I have a brighter outlook. Through a close and careful reading of the first eleven chapters of Genesis, this book shows convincingly that hidden beneath the surface of the text, there is not one beginning, but rather two beginnings. Two accounts of creation are followed by two parallel narratives that reflect two distinct and at times competing worldviews regarding the nature of God, of human beings, of our role in the world, of the relationship between the man and the woman, and much more. Whether one accepts the traditional or the critical view of the Torah’s origins, In the Beginnings is a vivid and powerful testimony to the Torah’s depth, richness, and multivocality, with profound implications for the ways it is to be understood and lived in our day.
