Lonka survived with her mother Fella the years of the Holocaust in the Krakow Ghetto and the concentration and extermination camps Plaszów, Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Terezin. Her father, a baby brother and extended family members perished. For 70 years she was married to Dr. Yanek (Jerzy) Nass (1927–2021). Yanek survived with his parents first in an underground bunker in the Polish town Jaworów, today Ukraine. He witnessed the atrocities committed by the Nazis and their Ukrainian collaborators. He was one of a small group of boys who fled briefly to the forests after joining Artek Hener. Most of the boys were killed. Lonka and Yanek immigrated to Israel, where they rebuilt their lives. THE LONKA PROJECT is a photographic tribute to the last Holocaust survivors around the world. Since 2019, hundreds of professional photographers, many world leaders in their respective fields, volunteered their talent not only to capture the human subjects artistically, but also to draw lessons and serve as memory keepers for tomorrow’s generations who will never know a Holocaust survivor. For the participating survivors around the world who generously opened their homes and hearts to the photographers, The Lonka Project carries their global message for tolerance, humanity and compassion in a world not rid of antisemitism and ethnic hatred. The rhythms of life do not mitigate the horrors of the past, yet the survivors continue to stand as a symbol of optimism. This book celebrates resilience and the power of life. We participating photographers believe it is our duty to shine a spotlight on the last living witnesses of the Holocaust, because truth cannot be defeated. The principal business partner of Otto Frank, Victor Kugler assumed managerial control of the Franks’ Amsterdam spice-importing business when Nazi persecution forced the Frank family into hiding. It was Victor Kugler who kept the business going and obtained food rations under what was the harshest German wartime occupation in all of Western Europe. Without Victor Kugler, Anne Frank and her family would have starved to death a month after going into hiding. For this heroism, Victor Kugler himself was arrested and sent to a series of German labor camps in Holland where he survived by his wits and finally escaped a few weeks before the end of the war. Several years after the end of the war, when the Dutch spice business collapsed following the Indonesian revolution that nationalized Dutch holdings, Victor Kugler emigrated to Toronto, Canada. The author, born in Puitusk (some fifty kilometers from Warsaw), skillfully and honestly tells of the painful dramas in which he was involved in his youth in Poland during World War II. The true story unfolds of two young Jewish men who took Aryan identities, at the time of the Polish uprising and when Warsaw had been abandoned. Severin Gabriel, who was in hiding in Warsaw, and who survived with the aid of his brother and of Lady Wanda and other Polish friends, casts a personal light on his life-shattering experiences, which are at once unique and also reminiscent of so many war stories. With poignancy an intimacy, he reenacts his fears and nightmares and those of his comrades in the city besieged by German occupying forces. In this diary-memoir, the author’s fight to survive during the Polish uprising in the early autumn of 1944, the deportation of the Polish residents of Warsaw at the beginning of October 1944, and events leading up to their return to the ruined city, are given special attention. Little has been written about the period encompassing the deportation and return, and therefore In the Ruins of Warsaw Streets, based on the author’s authentic diary, is of historical value beyond its private significance. A strong sense of belonging to the Jewish people has been Stanley Abramovitch s driving motivation to assist Jewish communities and individuals on three continents and over six decades with faithful dedication. His work with JDC began in the DP camps in Germany, where he assisted in the rehabilitation of survivors, established schools, and saw to the individual needs of thousands of Jews. A collection of remarkable tales by a remarkable individual. Reviews: The author's description of his lifelong association with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee – known to millions as the Joint – begins with the exhausted survivors of post-Holocaust Germany. He then takes us through the once-glorious Jewish communities of Iran and North Africa, to the revitalization of west European Jewry, and eventually to Israel and to the renaissance of Jewish life in the former Soviet Union. Crisp and intensely human, this portrayal offers inspiring insight into the capacity of Jews, collectively and individually, to secure their destiny. From Survival to Revival is a fascinating and eminently readable overview of Jewish history during the 20th century. The author has been personally involved in almost all the major aspects of this tragic, heroic, and unforgettable epoch. He manages to make his account professionally accurate. Imagination and creativity have played a critical role throughout Rita's life, in her work as a psychologist, art therapist, and artist. Through dream interpretation and engaging in dialogue with dream figures based on Jung's method of active imagination, Rita demonstrates powerful techniques for coping with personal trauma. When the Jewish persecution began, her family spent many months in the Dryswiaty ghetto, doing forced labor. Upon excaping from the ghetto the family searched for refuge, and ultimately found the Grub- a narrow underground pit under the stable of a Christian family, where they hid for twenty-two long months. After the liberation, the Kasimow family moved to Germany and in 1949 they arrived in New York. Rita received several academic degrees in the USA and in Israel. The memories of David Shachar are a journey through the tunnel of time: from wanderings in Poland to the life of a refugee in World War II, and on to a soldier’s life fighting the Nazis. After the war, while studying radio electronics in Paris, David cut his studies short and came to Israel to fight in the War of Independence. A few years later, David and his wife, Chaya, answered Ben-Gurion’s call to settle the country “from the city to the frontier,” and they moved to the development town of Kiryat Shmona. This was in response to SS instructions that no prisoners should be found when Allied troops arrived. The “death marches” are infamous, but less well known is that there were also many transfers by train. These transports were frequently conducted from within the camps themselves. When the Allied armies smashed beyond the Rhine and began slicing into central Germany, in early April 1945, three trains left Bergen-Belsen. One reached its destination in Theresienstadt. The second was liberated by the Americans at a village near Farsleben in Germany. The last of the three transports, the one we were on, was the last train to leave Bergen-Belsen. It never reached its destination. Our train contained about twenty-five hundred Jews – men, women, and children – and a group of armed SS guards. We were all loaded into forty-five railway cars. Some were passenger cars and some were typical antiquated freight cars called “forty and eights,” signifying that these cars would accommodate forty men or eight horses. I was thirteen years old when I climbed with my mother and two brothers onto this train. The armed SS guards, striding around the platform, kept motioning for the prisoners to move, yelling over the noise of truck engines, “Vorwärts! Schneller! Move it! Faster! Get it moving!
