רג'ין קנטי היא בת אמצעות במשפחה יהודית מבוססת בעיר רוסה בבולגריה. הוריה, חסרי אזרחות בולגרית, גורשו מהמדינה ע"י המשטר הפרו-נאצי בתקופת מלה"ע השניה. כרבים אחרים, משפחת קנטי נאלצת לעזוב בחופזה את בולגריה בספינה הרעועה "סלבדור". באסון הטביעה שהתרחש ב-12 בדצמבר 1940 ניצלו רג'ין בת ה-18 ואביה, אך אמה ואחיה הצעיר אבדו בים. רג'ין הצעירה שנקלעת למשבר אישי קשה מנשוא בעקבות האסון שפקד את משפחתה מצליחה לרפא את פצעיה במנזר האחיות ציון בירושלים. מכאן מתחילה מסכת חיים מרתקת על פני יבשות ומדינות שונות, הנפרשת בכישרון ע"י הסופרת רות דנון. סיפור אמיתי שנקרא בנשימה אחת.
